Lancaster, California

Originally home to the Native American Paiute tribe, Lancaster is a city in the Antelope Valley in California's High Desert. Together with its southern neighbor Palmdale, these twin cities form the main population areas in the western Mojave Desert. Part of Los Angeles County, Lancaster is about 70 miles north of downtown LA. When the Southern Pacific Railroad started to build its route between San Francisco and Los Angeles, it established a settlement in the area. The region has a celebrated military and technological history. Famed pilot Chuck Yeager's groundbreaking flight exceeding the speed of sound was accomplished at nearby Muroc Air Force Base. Since being renamed Edwards Air Force Base, this location has witnessed many aviary feats, including several Space Shuttle landings. Following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the US Army Air Force began training flight cadets in the area for service overseas. In addition to several government agencies, Lancaster today is home to numerous aviation and defense entities as well. Visitors to the Lancaster Aerospace Walk of Honor will find an F-4 Phantom jet fighter on display. A city that looks forward to a more carbon neutral future, Lancaster became the first city in the US to require all new homes to be built with solar panels. Lancaster is also the venue for many visitors who wish to see native California poppies and other wildflowers in their natural habitat. Another popular tourist destination is a portion of highway built by the Honda Car Company. When driving on this portion of the road, the grooves in the asphalt make it is possible to hear part of the Finale of the William Tell Overture.
