Fontana, California

When Fontana was founded in 1913 it became an agricultural area, but was transformed by Henry J. Kaiser’s steel mill (the only one of its kind west of the Mississippi River) during World War II. It is now a regional hub of the trucking industry with Interstates 10 and 15 and State Route 210 passing through the city. Also in Fontana is the famous U.S. Route 66 (now known as Foothill Boulevard). Fontana’s climate is often affected by the Santa Ana Winds which are characteristically strong, dry and hot and can be very hot in the summer months with temperatures hovering over 100 degrees. Occupying Fontana is the largest of the San Bernardino County libraries, a renovated historic theater, a municipal park, and on the site of the Kaiser Steel Mill is NASCAR’s Auto Club Speedway. For a few days every year, the speedway brings tens of thousands of racing fans and dozens of teams to the area which positively impacts local businesses.  Fontana's current economy is dominated by industry, especially trucking related. Found in Fontana are several truck dealerships and other industrial equipment sales centers as well as many product distribution centers for companies such as Target, Sears, Southern California Edison, Home Shopping Network, Avery Dennison, and vehicle manufacturers, Toyota and Mercedes–Benz.
